What trailer repair services do you offer?

Axle alignment: when the trailer pulls to one side, tires wear unevenly, or the tractor works harder than normal to track straight — the trailer axle is out of alignment.

How do I know if my trailer needs alignment?

The most common signs of a misaligned trailer axle are:

Irregular or accelerated tire wear — especially on the inner or outer shoulder of the tire.

The tractor pulls to one side on a straight road — if this appears or worsens when you hook up the trailer, the trailer is the culprit.

Higher than normal fuel consumption — a misaligned trailer increases rolling resistance.

The trailer sways side to side on the highway (trailer snaking).

The best time to check trailer alignment is when you change tires — if the previous wear was uneven, new tires will develop the same problem without correction.

What types of trailer suspension do you repair?

We repair both leaf spring (mechanical) and air ride suspension.

Leaf spring: we replace individual springs and full packs, bushings, hangers, and pins. A broken or sagged spring causes the trailer to run unlevel and can throw axle alignment off.

Air ride: we repair air bags, leveling valves, and bag supports. When air ride suspension fails, the trailer drops on one side — which can damage cargo, misalign axles, and accelerate tire wear.

What trailer brake problems do you handle?

We repair the complete trailer air brake system: brake stroke adjustment, service chambers and spring brakes, S-cams, slack adjusters, brake shoes, drums, gladhands, and airlines.

A common sign of trailer brake trouble: the tractor brakes but the trailer 'pushes', or the vehicle pulls to one side when braking — indicating one trailer axle is applying more force than another.

Why are my trailer tires wearing unevenly?

Irregular trailer tire wear almost always has a mechanical cause. The most common:

Axle misalignment: the axle is angled off-center, causing the tire to roll at a constant angle — generating wear on the inner or outer shoulder.

Worn suspension: weak springs or deteriorated bushings allow lateral axle movement that causes irregular wear and cupping. In trailers with air-ride suspension, there is a serious and frequently overlooked problem: many bushings are hidden inside the suspension arms and completely escape traditional visual inspection. The result is that they remain in service far longer than ideal — allowing axles to progressively misalign without detection until tire wear reveals the problem.

Loose or worn wheel bearings: this is currently one of the most serious problems on trailers and a frequently missed cause of premature tire wear. A bearing with excessive play allows the wheel to spin at a slight angle — creating an irregular wear pattern very similar to misalignment, but one that alignment correction won't fix. Visual inspection normally doesn't catch it; the wheel's play must be physically checked. Beyond destroying tires, a worn bearing can heat up until the wheel seizes, or lose its grease seal — contaminating the brake linings and compromising the brake system.

Dragging brake: when a brake doesn't fully release, the tire wears flat at one spot or across the whole tread band.

Incorrect air pressure: over-inflation wears the center of the tread; under-inflation wears both shoulders.

How often should I service my trailer?

We recommend monthly brake adjustment checks, S-cam lubrication every two weeks, and suspension/alignment review every six months — or each time you change tires.

FMCSA requires an annual inspection as the legal minimum, but for a unit in daily operation that minimum is not enough to prevent costly wear and DOT violations.

How much does trailer alignment cost?

The cost depends on the type of trailer, number of axles, and whether there's suspension damage that caused the misalignment. If springs are sagged or bushings are worn, those must be corrected first — otherwise the alignment won't hold.

We start with the free La Bailada™ (Truck Dance) inspection to determine if it's pure alignment or if there's an underlying mechanical cause. We only quote after diagnosis — a 'starting at' price without seeing the trailer rarely reflects what the unit actually needs.

Can I keep driving with a broken leaf spring on my trailer?

It's not advisable and is often illegal. A broken spring leaves the axle unlevel, immediately throws wheel alignment off, and can cause that axle's load to exceed legal weight limits (a DOT violation). The broken spring also transfers its load to the remaining leaves in the pack — another spring usually breaks within days.

If the spring is completely snapped (not just a single leaf), the axle can shift laterally — the trailer should not be moved until repaired.

What do I do if an air bag blows out on my trailer on the highway?

That side of the axle loses suspension support and the trailer drops. Steps: reduce speed gradually (do not brake hard — weight distribution is already compromised), pull off the road to a safe location. The trailer can travel short distances on a blown bag, but the axle rests on the metal bump stop, which can damage the frame.

Do not attempt to cross loading docks or highway ramps in that condition — the frame may contact the ground.

What causes a trailer to be placed out of service in a DOT inspection?

The brake system is the #1 cause of trailer out-of-service violations. Most common conditions:

Brake stroke out of adjustment: one chamber with excessive push-rod travel can result in an out-of-service order.

Brake shoes below minimum lining thickness (¼ inch at any point).

Cracked or worn-out-of-tolerance brake drums.

Air leaks at chambers, airlines, or gladhands — insufficient pressure means brakes don't apply with required force.

Spring brakes that don't apply or don't release correctly.

Broken suspension springs where load-carrying capacity is compromised.

Leaking wheel seals contaminating brake shoes — an immediate out-of-service condition because it eliminates braking friction.

What is 'brake stroke' and how do I know if it's out of spec?

Brake stroke is the distance the chamber push rod travels when brakes are applied at 90 psi. It's the most direct indicator of whether brakes are properly adjusted — on both trailers and tractors.

FMCSA maximum limits by chamber size:
- Type 20: 2.0 inches
- Type 24: 2.25 inches
- Type 30 standard: 2.5 inches
- Type 30 Long Stroke: 3.0 inches — this type allows more push-rod travel than a standard Type 30; it's important to identify it correctly, because applying the standard limit to a Long Stroke chamber leads to a false out-of-spec diagnosis
- Type 36: 3.0 inches

Any chamber exceeding its corresponding limit means brakes on that axle aren't applying with full force — an out-of-service condition in a DOT inspection.

The most common mistake: the driver feels like the brakes 'work fine' and assumes they're in spec. Brake stroke can't be felt from the cab — it must be measured. We check every chamber as part of the La Bailada™ (Truck Dance) inspection.

Does a trailer need its own alignment separate from the tractor?

Yes — this is one of the most common misconceptions. Tractor alignment and trailer alignment are completely independent systems.

The tractor can be perfectly aligned while the trailer is severely misaligned, and vice versa. A clear sign the problem is in the trailer: tractor tires wear evenly but trailer tires show irregular wear. Or the combination pulls to one side when the trailer is hooked up but the tractor tracks straight on its own.

Aligning only the tractor when the trailer is the source of the problem solves nothing — trailer tires keep destroying themselves and fuel consumption stays elevated.

What's the difference between adjusting trailer brakes and repairing them?

Brake adjustment: setting the push-rod stroke to FMCSA spec — routine preventive maintenance that doesn't involve replacing any component. Low cost and time. Should be done monthly on trailers in daily operation.

Important note on automatic slack adjusters: the vast majority of modern trailers and tractors manufactured since 1994 are equipped with automatic slack adjusters. On these systems, routine manual adjustment is NOT recommended. If push-rod stroke is out of spec on a unit with automatic slack adjusters, manual adjustment only masks the real problem — the adjuster is not operating correctly and must be inspected and repaired. Forcing manual adjustment on a defective automatic adjuster can create a dangerous condition: brakes appear to be in spec but quickly go out of adjustment once the unit is in service, without the driver noticing.

Brake repair: replacing worn or damaged components — shoes, drums, chambers, S-cams, slack adjusters.

The most common mistake: waiting until brakes 'aren't working well' before doing anything. By that point, worn-down brake shoes have already scored the drum — what could have been a shoe replacement becomes a shoes-plus-drums job.

How do I know if my trailer axle is bent vs. just misaligned?

The difference matters because the fix is completely different.

Misalignment: the axle is structurally sound but its position relative to the frame has shifted — correctable with alignment equipment.

Bent axle: structural deformation from a severe impact (deep pothole, accident, point overload). The alignment machine will detect an offset outside its correction range.

Signs of a bent axle: tire wear concentrated at one specific point on the tread (not across the whole shoulder), severe vibration at low speeds that worsens as speed increases, or visible asymmetry when inspecting the axle from underneath the trailer.

I have an air leak on my trailer — what could be causing it?

Common causes:

Gladhands (tractor-trailer air couplers): the rubber gaskets deteriorate with use and heat — they can leak even when the connection appears tight. This is the most frequent cause and the easiest to fix.

Damaged airlines: the plastic lines running along the trailer frame can crack from vibration, age, or rubbing against the frame. Bend points and curves are the most vulnerable.

Broken brake chamber diaphragm: when the internal diaphragm fails, air escapes externally. Sign: you can hear the leak near a specific wheel when the brake pedal is applied.

Air bag failure: a cracked bag leaks continuously — when it fully fails, the trailer drops on that side.

Control valve leaks (relay valve, quick-release, park/emergency valve): internal seals deteriorate over time.

To locate: with the system pressurized and brakes applied, apply soapy water along airlines, gladhands, chambers, and valves — bubbles show exactly where the leak is.
